Los elementos radiactivos se descomponen constantemente en el n\u00facleo y el manto de la Tierra. Este proceso produce calor, que se irradia hacia la superficie terrestre. Durante ese proceso, el calor se encuentra con dep\u00f3sitos geot\u00e9rmicos naturales, que a menudo contienen agua caliente o vapor. Para acceder a estos recursos, las centrales geot\u00e9rmicas perforan yacimientos geot\u00e9rmicos subterr\u00e1neos. Los recursos hidrotermales se conducen a la superficie, donde se utilizan para hacer girar una turbina conectada a un generador. Utilizan dep\u00f3sitos subterr\u00e1neos de agua muy caliente y presurizada. La presi\u00f3n empuja el agua a la superficie, donde se recoge en un tanque flash y se hierve para convertirla en vapor, que hace girar una turbina. El vapor de este l\u00edquido secundario se utiliza para hacer girar una turbina. El agua caliente geot\u00e9rmica nunca entra en contacto directo con el l\u00edquido secundario ni con la turbina. Las centrales de ciclo binario son el tipo m\u00e1s reciente de central geot\u00e9rmica.
