Al utilizar estos recursos para crear bioenerg\u00eda, reducimos las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, desviamos residuos de los vertederos y creamos fuentes de ingresos adicionales. La biomasa es un recurso renovable porque es abundante y se regenera r\u00e1pidamente. Con una gesti\u00f3n responsable, la bioenerg\u00eda puede ser neutra en carbono. Esto significa que, aunque se libera carbono a la atm\u00f3sfera cuando la biomasa se convierte en energ\u00eda, el proceso de creaci\u00f3n de biomasa extrae la misma cantidad de carbono de la atm\u00f3sfera. Este calor se utiliza para crear vapor que acciona una turbina, la cual genera energ\u00eda mec\u00e1nica que se convierte en electricidad. La combusti\u00f3n directa tambi\u00e9n puede utilizarse para calentar el agua y los espacios de los edificios.<\/p><p><strong>Digesti\u00f3n anaerobia<\/strong><\/p><p>La descomposici\u00f3n de la biomasa libera gas metano y di\u00f3xido de carbono. En el proceso de digesti\u00f3n anaerobia, la biomasa procedente del esti\u00e9rcol, los residuos alimentarios y otros materiales org\u00e1nicos se introduce en un recipiente herm\u00e9tico sin ox\u00edgeno. Una vez contenida, esta biomasa es descompuesta por bacterias, que crean gas como subproducto. Este gas se recoge y se utiliza como alternativa renovable al gas natural.<\/p><p><strong>Conversi\u00f3n de combustible<\/strong><\/p><p>La biomasa tambi\u00e9n puede convertirse en biocombustibles que act\u00faan como alternativa a los combustibles f\u00f3siles. La masa de biomasa puede convertirse en combustible mediante conversi\u00f3n termoqu\u00edmica, conversi\u00f3n qu\u00edmica o conversi\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica. La conversi\u00f3n termoqu\u00edmica utiliza el calor para crear combustible en un recipiente presurizado. Este combustible puede ser s\u00f3lido, l\u00edquido o gaseoso, dependiendo del proceso exacto. La conversi\u00f3n qu\u00edmica utiliza productos qu\u00edmicos para crear combustible l\u00edquido, normalmente en forma de biodi\u00e9sel. Los biocombustibles l\u00edquidos m\u00e1s comunes son el etanol, elaborado a partir de los az\u00facares de los cereales, y el biodi\u00e9sel, elaborado a partir de aceites naturales. Ambos combustibles ofrecen alternativas m\u00e1s limpias a la gasolina y el gas\u00f3leo. Estos combustibles alternativos suelen mezclarse con fuentes de combustible tradicionales.
