Elles utilisent des r\u00e9servoirs souterrains d'eau extr\u00eamement chaude et fortement pressuris\u00e9e. La pression pousse l'eau vers la surface, o\u00f9 elle est recueillie dans un r\u00e9servoir de flash et bouillie en vapeur, qui fait tourner une turbine. La vapeur de ce liquide secondaire est utilis\u00e9e pour faire tourner une turbine. L'eau chaude g\u00e9othermique ne rencontre jamais directement le liquide secondaire ou la turbine. Les centrales \u00e0 cycle binaire sont le type le plus r\u00e9cent de centrales g\u00e9othermiques.
