SAN RAFAEL and CONCORD, Calif. — Today, California’s first Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program marks 15 years of providing renewable electricity and local energy solutions in the Bay Area. Since its launch in 2010, MCE has helped more than 1.5 million residents and businesses across Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, and Solano Counties access cleaner electricity, lower costs, and community investment.

MCE’s launch as a local not-for-profit public agency sparked a statewide transformation for public clean energy, shaping the state’s transition away from fossil fuels. What began as a small choice for 8,000 residents and businesses to get cleaner electricity supply has grown to serve more than 585,000 customers in 38 MCE communities — and is a steadfast guide for energy providers across the state and nation.

MCE - Dawn Weisz

“This milestone represents what’s possible when we listen to and collaborate with frontline communities to tackle our biggest challenges. With the success of community choice energy, over 14 million Californians have access to cleaner energy, competitive rates, and more control over their energy choices.”

As the catalyst for California’s community choice energy movement, MCE offers 60% and 100% renewable electricity service, which has eliminated 500,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions — the equivalent of removing over 116,000 gas-powered cars from the road.

Since 2010, MCE customers have:

  • Saved nearly $100 million compared to PG&E
  • Met and surpassed California’s clean electricity target 18 years ahead of schedule
  • Secured lower energy prices with A-range investment-grade credit ratings from Fitch Ratings (A-) and S&P Global (A)
  • Reinvested more than $358 million into local renewable energy projects, EV rebates, energy efficiency, and bill savings for income-qualifying residents
  • Supported more than 6,500 green jobs in California

MCE’s story is still being written — and the impact is growing every year. Learn more about MCE’s work at mcecleanenergy.org/our-impact.
