SAN RAFAEL and CONCORD, Calif. — Residents, local leaders, and community partners gathered in Martinez on Saturday to celebrate the unveiling of a new community mural at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa. Created by Martinez-based artist collective Illuminaries, the mural faces City Hall and highlights the power of youth creativity, local climate action, and public art to bring people together.
Held at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa, the event featured live mural painting, remarks from local leaders and artists, performances by the Alhambra High School Marching Band, children’s activities, and local food vendors. Approximately 150 people attended the celebration, which also included family-friendly community booths and games.
The mural, sponsored by MCE, was created through a collaboration between the City of Martinez, Illuminaries, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa. Community partners participating in the event included Loaves & Fishes, Sustainable Contra Costa, 350 Action Contra Costa, John Muir Association, Tacos Don Chai, and Barrelista Coffee House.
“This mural reflects what strong local partnerships can look like and how clean energy can transform a community. The mural adds to Martinez’ good energy, bringing art, community, and climate awareness into a space centered on young people and creates something lasting for Martinez families to enjoy together.”
Brianne Zorn, Martinez Mayor and MCE Board Director
Since beginning service in Martinez in 2018, MCE has provided residents and businesses with cleaner electricity options including Light Green 60% renewable electricity service and Deep Green 100% renewable service, which the City chose for its facilities in 2025 to support its climate goals. The event also recognized Martinez’s 150th anniversary and highlighted MCE’s ongoing partnership with the city.
"The phrase ‘You’ve Got Good Energy’ is a play on more than one idea. It’s about clean energy, but it’s also about who you are as a person. We wanted young people to see this mural and know that they have something to offer, that they can express themselves, affect change, and do what they love.”
Tim Hon of Illuminaries
Julee Winterbourne, Director of Development and Community Engagement of Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa, said the mural reflects the energy of the young people and neighborhood it was created to serve.
“Public art like this helps make belonging visible. It gives young people something colorful, positive, and local to connect with and reminds them that their creativity matters here."
Julee Winterbourne, Director of Development and Community Engagement of Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa
To date, MCE has reinvested more than $2.3 million in Martinez through local clean energy programs, workforce development, and community partnerships that help reduce energy costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and expand access to renewable energy.
Today, MCE serves more than 6,400 electric accounts in Martinez with renewable electricity service reflecting its commitment to “good energy” that means clean air, vibrant neighborhoods, and a community where people can flourish.
MCE’s rates have been stable since the agency’s last major rate change in 2023. Combined with $10 million distributed to customers through the MCE Cares Credit, MCE has prioritized customer affordability while maintaining a strong credit rating and advancing energy equity through clean energy programs.
