Community Power Coalition Symposium: Highlights and Takeaways

Community Power Coalition Symposium: Highlights and Takeaways

We ended 2024 on a high note with the success of our first Community Power Coalition (ComPow) Symposium, an all-day event bringing together representatives from organizations across the Bay Area.

Representatives included 62 attendees from 35 organizations from all four counties in MCE’s service area. The symposium was a milestone in advancing partnerships in climate equity, sustainability, and collaboration.

Highlights

  • Equity in Practice: With attendance from Spanish-speaking community health workers, MCE’s bilingual staff provided real-time interpretation to ensure that all voices were heard. This commitment to accessibility and equity was reflected throughout the event to create an open and collaborative environment.
  • Technology Demos: In between panels, technology demonstrations showing induction cooktops and heat pump water heaters gave attendees an opportunity to learn about emerging electrification technologies to combat the climate crisis.
  • New Members: It’s always a pleasure to continue strengthening partnerships with long-standing partners, and we were equally thrilled to welcome newcomers to the symposium. New partners bring fresh perspectives and novel approaches that help push the conversations forward.

“Thank you, MCE, for putting on such a well-organized, welcoming and information-filled symposium. It was great to see and connect with community members in my county and across MCE's territory to hear timely updates on your work and other relevant topics.”

Session Spotlights

The day opened with remarks from MCE’s CEO, Dawn Weisz, followed by a packed schedule of panels, technology demonstrations, and a poster session displaying MCE’s initiatives.

  • Show Me the Money: Highlighted grants and incentives for energy efficiency, clean energy projects, and community-based programs.
  • Power Up for All: Discussed the integration of local and regional energy systems to ensure grid reliability and equitable access.
  • Why Are California Electric Bills So High? Explored affordability challenges, utility bill education, and cost-saving resources for communities.
  • Connect with Spanish-Speaking Communities: Covered strategies for effective engagement and building trust with Spanish-speaking populations.
  • Energy Partnerships: Emphasized collaboration to enhance community resilience and sustainable energy solutions.
  • Equity at MCE: Showcased MCE’s efforts to provide equitable benefits and energy access through customer programs.
  • Innovative Technologies: Examined the role of electrification and renewable technologies in reducing emissions and achieving climate goals.

Each session underscored the shared commitment to collaborate and serve communities through equitable, sustainable energy solutions.

The day closed with a presentation by Jenna Tenney, MCE’s Director of Communications and Community Engagement. Jenna’s presentation highlighted the critical role of community partnerships in advancing shared goals to address the climate crisis.

Takeaways

The ComPow Symposium was an impactful event, offering valuable information, networking opportunities, and meaningful engagement with a diverse group of community partners. The sessions were insightful, well-organized, and well-received, and participants provided positive feedback.

We appreciate everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this inaugural event. Your shared passion and dedication has laid a strong foundation for future gatherings like this as we continue to build partnerships and create resilient, equitable, and clean energy communities.

Planning is underway for a symposium in 2025, and we encourage all eligible organizations to join and be part of this movement. If your organization is interested in joining ComPow meetings or the next symposium, reach out to engagement@mceCleanEnergy.org. We look forward to seeing you there!
