Green on the Go: Top Tips for the Sustainable Traveler

Green on the Go: Top Tips for the Sustainable Traveler

Are you planning a spring break get-a-way? Check out MCE’s top tips for sustainable travel, from choosing cleaner transportation, to supporting local businesses. Take your green travel to the next level!

  1. Find Eco-Friendly Transportation
Travel by train, bus, or even carpool with your friends in an EV. MCE’s EV smart charging app, MCE Sync, can optimize charging times and locate charging stations. Consider exploring local gems to reduce travel time and keep your carbon footprint low!
  2. Go Local
To support your destination’s local economy, look for farm-to-table restaurants and family-owned businesses. Local produce and specialties often have a smaller carbon footprint than imported goods, and they often support local artists and workers. Check out MCE’s Deep Green Champions to see local businesses that are walking the talk with 100% renewable energy.
  3. Offset Your Carbon Footprint
When traveling, consider ways to offset your carbon footprint by using less energy at home. Before leaving your house, unplug your electronic devices to avoid vampire appliances that drain energy even when they aren’t in use and can account for up to 10% of your annual energy use. Consider energy efficiency upgrades that can save you money and lower your carbon footprint. Check out MCE’s programs to see what changes you can make or go green with 100% renewable energy.
  4. Use Off-Peak Energy
Did you know that, by using less electricity from 4−9 p.m., you can lower your carbon footprint? By shifting the bulk of your electricity use to 12−4 p.m., you’re taking advantage of midday solar generation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. While you’re away from home, use tools like smart thermostats to automate your energy usage and help you save on your utility bill. In the United States, more than 35% of energy is dedicated on average to temperature control.

Sustainable travel is not just about reducing your carbon footprint; it’s also about making conscious choices that benefit local communities and our environment. By following these tips, you can enjoy a memorable spring break while contributing positively to the environment. Don’t forget to have fun out there and enjoy your vacation!
