Three Energy-Smart Resolutions for the New Year

Three Energy-Smart Resolutions for the New Year

Here are our top three energy-smart resolutions for bill savings and reduced emissions:
● Use less power from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
● Upgrade to electric appliances
● Become more energy efficient

It’s always the right time to implement smart energy practices, but for many of us it can be easy to get caught up in distractions throughout the year. The new year is a perfect time to start fresh and implement energy habits that will benefit your wallet and the Earth for years to come. Here are our top three resolutions to guide you to your smart-energy future.

Resolution #1: Use less power from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
When you use electricity matters as much as how much electricity you use. Using less power from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. lowers your bill and helps support California’s transition to renewable energy. Make sure you’re on a Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plan to get the most benefit. Where to start:

  • Run major appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer) first thing in the morning or after 9 p.m.
  • Preheat or cool your home so that you don’t need to use your heating or cooling system during peak hours (4−9 p.m.).
  • Wait to charge your electric car until after 9 p.m.
  • Avoid electricity entirely. Consider line drying your clothes, going for a walk during peak hours, or trying a hobby that doesn’t require electricity.

Resolution #2: Electrify everything
Electrifying your home is an impactful way to reduce emissions. Compared to traditional gas appliances, electric appliances are more energy efficient and produce fewer pollutants. Where to start:

  • Swap your gas stove for an induction or electric cooktop for lower climate impact and better indoor air quality.
  • Upgrade to a heat pump for your water and space heating needs.
  • Switch from a gas clothes dryer to a new electric model.
  • Look into electric models for leaf blowers and lawn mowers.

Resolution #3: Use energy more efficiently
Using energy efficiently means that you’re able to achieve the same level of comfort in your home with less energy. Making energy efficiency a priority is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and cut down on your utility bill. Where to start:

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room and unplug appliances when they aren’t in use to stop them from consuming energy unnecessarily.
  • Install more insulation and regularly replace air filters to help your air conditioner run more efficiently.
  • Replace incandescent and CFL light bulbs with LED bulbs, which use up to 70−90% less energy.
  • Check if you qualify for MCE’s free home energy upgrades and virtual home energy assessment.
