California’s transportation sector accounts for about 40% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. To combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, California aims to achieve 100% zero-emission vehicle sales for new passenger vehicles by 2035. MCE is supporting this transition by making EV adoption more affordable through the EV Instant Rebate Program.
“If you want an electric vehicle, I recommend getting a rebate from MCE. Luckily for me, I learned getting an EV isn’t as hard as you might think.”

Benefits of Owning an Electric Vehicle
EVs run on electricity, not gas, so EV drivers save an average of $1,000 a year on fuel. The motors on EVs are electric, which means there are fewer moving parts and they never require oil changes, new spark plugs, or fuel filters. Less maintenance and no fuel costs make the long-term EV ownership cost much lower than a gas-powered vehicle.
“I recommend the MCE EV Rebate Program, and I encourage people to go green for the environment. You’ll save hundreds of dollars! Once I familiarized myself with where to charge up, I didn’t worry so much about the range of my EV. I work in San Francisco, so I need to save at the pump and be able to drive in the carpool lane. My EV lets me do that.”
Althea, El Sobrante
EV drivers eliminate their need for gas station trips by either charging their vehicle at home or at public charging stations located at businesses you may already be frequenting, like the grocery store. Charge your EV at home overnight after peak hours to ensure a full battery in the morning and lower electricity costs. Or take advantage of the many public charging stations available. Public charging infrastructure is rapidly expanding, providing a network of chargers in urban areas and along highways, which supports long-distance travel and reduces your worry about having enough range to get home.
“I don’t charge at home, but it’s extremely easy at nearby places and even free where I work. No range anxiety here!”

How does MCE’s EV Instant Rebate Program work?
MCE’s EV Instant Rebate Program partners with local dealerships to provide income-qualified EV buyers a $3,500 rebate at the time of purchasing or leasing a new EV or plug-in hybrid. Those purchasing or leasing a preowned EV or plug-in hybrid can get a $2,000 rebate at the time of sale.
The rebate process is straightforward, with the discount applied directly at the dealership – eliminating the need for post-purchase rebate applications and long waiting periods for reimbursement. To see if you’re eligible, visit MCE’s EV Instant Rebate page.
“I did the math. Incentives were very important. I couldn’t have purchased this car otherwise. MCE made it simple and easy.”
Damian, Novato
By minimizing up-front costs at the time of purchase, more drivers have access to EVs. MCE can also help qualifying customers combine the rebate with federal, state, and local incentives. Use MCE’s Rebate and Incentive Finder tool to find more cost-saving opportunities.
"We bought an EV for a lot of reasons. One was the effect on the climate, and another was that there aren't public transport options where we live. Because we're low income, we were able to find a variety of grants (like MCE's EV Instant Rebate Program) that made the cost of the EV significantly less than the cost of a gas-powered car."
