EV charging without the bill shock

Driving electric can be easier on your wallet, especially when you build a few simple habits into your charging routine. Here are some easy ways to keep charging costs down without adding another chore to your day.

Charge when electricity costs less

If you’re on a Time-of-Use rate, try to avoid charging during the 4–9 p.m. peak window. Plugging in later at night or early in the morning, when demand is lower, can help make off-peak charging your default routine.

Set it and forget it

Most EVs make this easy. Use your vehicle’s charging schedule or mobile app to set a “start charging” time or a “ready by” time, then plug in when you get home and let your car handle the rest.

Check your rate

An EV or other Time-of-Use rate may help lower costs if most of your charging happens off-peak. Just remember that your whole home’s electricity use is included, not just your car, so it’s worth looking at when your household uses the most energy before switching.

Look for workplace charging perks

Don’t forget to look beyond home charging. Some employers offer free or discounted workplace charging, commuter benefits, preferred parking, or other EV driver perks, so a quick check with HR or facilities could add up to meaningful savings.

With a little planning, EV charging can be simple, affordable, and one less thing to think about.
