Celebrating California Wine Month: Napa Valley’s Commitment to Sustainability

MCE is celebrating California’s September Wine Month by highlighting the sustainability efforts in our very own Napa Valley region. A growing number of Napa Valley winemakers are embracing sustainability as a core value in their winemaking process. Today, 82% of California wine is made in a certified sustainable winery.

Deep Green 100% Renewable Energy

Some wineries in MCE’s service area have committed to sustainability by choosing MCE’s Deep Green 100% renewable energy service for their operations. This choice allows them to reduce their environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to produce high-quality wines. By becoming a Deep Green Champion, the following wineries and vineyards have publicly pledged to support clean energy:

For wineries like Matthiasson Wines, sustainability goes hand in hand with quality winemaking. The 2024 NorCal Public Media Food & Wine Awards recognized Matthiasson as “a beacon of sustainability and environmental stewardship” in Napa Valley. Matthiasson uses EVs, electric tractors, and eco-friendly packaging. Its approach to farming focuses on biodiversity and soil regeneration, which improves the health of the vineyards while combating climate change. The winery also provides year-round employment, health benefits, and educational opportunities to their workers, emphasizing the importance of both environmental and social responsibility.

In addition to being Deep Green Champions, Clif Family Winery, Hagafen Cellars, and Schweiger Vineyards are Napa Green. This certification means that wineries and vineyards are promoting long-term environmental health, conserving resources, and helping mitigate the impact of climate change to ensure that Napa Valley’s vineyards and wineries can continue thriving for future generations.

A Lasting Legacy

California Wine Month is an opportunity to appreciate the outstanding wines of Napa Valley and the region’s forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility. Wineries like Matthiasson, Clif Family, and Honig are showing how wine production can balance tradition with environmental stewardship. Their commitment to green practices ensures that Napa Valley’s winemaking legacy will continue for future generations while safeguarding the land that makes their craft possible.

As you enjoy a glass of Napa Valley wine this September, remember that you’re tasting world-class quality while supporting a region dedicated to preserving the environment and creating a more sustainable future. Cheers to that!
